Encyclopedia for Young People (EYP)

Encyclopedia News

In 1980, this monumental research and writing project was started under the general editorship of Ms. Tooran Mirhadi and Mr. Iraj Jahanshahi in response to the great need of the young for a reliable source of information about Iran, Islam and the world.  A public limited company, Sherkat-e Nashr-e Farhangnameh, was created in 1988 to publish this fully illustrated text.  To date, six volumes of the projected 22 volumes, of this alphabetical work have been published containing more than 1000 entries and 2500 maps and illustrations. Preparation for volumes 7,8, and 9 are underway simultaneously. The EYP has been greatly appreciated and some of the volumes have already been reprinted to keep up with demand. Volume 5 gives Iranian children the unique experience of using an encyclopedia index.

The EYP was awarded the Iranian National Book Award in 1998. Also it received the thied Kish Annual Award for the Promotion of Science in 1999.

More than 200 specialists in about 50 subjects and editorial groups collaborate in the creation of the EYP by freely donating their expertise. In order to create uniformity two woks namely Rahanaye nevisandeh va virastar (Guide for Writersand Editors), and Sado yek nokteh (101 Points for Writers) has been published. A special feature in the prouction of the EYP is the participation of about 90 children and young people as an advisory group.

The EYP has its own secretariat, library and programs.  The general editor together with full and part time staff manage its regular affairs.

In spite of generous donations in time and expertise, preparation of the material for the EYP is very costly.  In order to support EYP, Doostdaran-e farhangnameh (Friends of EYP) was created in 1995, and Young Friends Group was created two years later.  Since 1995, Friends of EYP have been active in fund raising and promotional activities such as organizing concerts, exhibitions, bazaars, auctions, briefing the media, publication of promotional materials, posters, and donations of EYP sets to schools.

Names of major donors to each volums appear at the beginning of that volume.
