• Nasrin Khosravi, distinguished Iranian illustrator, nominated by CBCI for the Hans Christian Andersen Award 2002. [January 02 2002

• Behrouz Gharibpour (author), Bahran Khaef (illustator), and Hossein Ebrahimi Elvand (translator) nominated by CBCI for the IBBY Honor List 2002. [January 02 2002]

• CBCI’s Exhibition: Iran in Children and Young People’s Literature, was held at Khanih Hunarmandan Iran (The Iranian Artists Forum) from Sept. 16 to 23 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. 420 notable works published between 1963 – 2000 were recorded in the Exhibition’s annotated catalog. Other activities included series of 12 lectures, Promotion programs for The Encyclopedia for Young People, audio book programs, introduction of related NGO’s,  publishers, etc. This well attended event was successfully managed, researched, and reported by some 80 young colleagues between 10 and 16.[January 02 2002]

• IBBY’s  Exhibition: Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities 2001, to be hosted by CBCI form October 10 to November 15, 2001. Three of the 40 books exhibited are from Iran. The catalog will be available in Persian. [ More about this news...] [January 02 2002

• CBCI to publish a monthly News Bulletin, starting from May 2002. The first issue is to cover March – May news, planned to be available online both in Persian and in English

• International Children's Book Foundation

ICBF will be hosting a Nowrooz celebration on March 2, 2002 in Los Angeles. The proceeds of the fundraising will go to cultural causes for Iranian youth, mainly to help CBCI's Encyclopedia for Young People, and Science and Arts Foundation. Guest speakers will be Kamran Elahian, Prof. Abbas Edalat, and Ms. Sogol Mafi.

Encyclopedia for Young People

January

• EYP’s six volume set hit highest record of sales at The Tehran International Book Exhibition, May 8-18 2001. [January 02 2002]

• Volume 7 to be published in early 2002. Work proceeding on parallel lines on volumes 8 and 9. [January 02 2002]

• Results of research on readability level of EYP shows shift towards more difficult language and style. [January 02 2002]

• School year 2000-2001 saw EYP move into many schools and classrooms. Both Friends of EYP, and EYP Promotion Group hope to be even more active in 2001-2002. [January 02 2002]

• Some 100 young people were active at CBCI/EYP as either reviewers or researchers during summer 2001. [January 02 2002]

• Friends of EYP, as part of their fund raising agenda, organized a concert June 20-21. It was attended by more than 1600 guests. Friends of EYP also sponsored publication projects including post cards, brochure, and EYP’s third promotion poster, designed by Bijan Jenab. All proceeds were donated to CBCI/EYP. [January 02 2002]

• One of  CBF’s  major aims is to support the continuation, development, and distribution of EYP. [January 02 2002]

General

• CBCI celebrated its 40th anniversary among several hundreds. Diplomas were presented, and colleagues honored.

•  M.R. Bayrami, winner of the Swiss Blue Cobra Award 2001, shared his first experiences of traveling outside Iran.

• Executive Council of the Reviewing Groups was created to better co-ordinate one of CBCI’s oldest activities.

•  Conference on “Children, Peace and Toys”, organized by Center for Research on Pre-school Education promoted by CBCI.

•  A one-month workshop organized to discuss issues related to the administration of “The Inclusive Libraries”. (Unicef, Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults).

•  CBCI to provide works written for / by children and young people for the new edition of the [Persian language] Dictionary for Elementary Schools, by Dr. Gitty Shokri.

•   “Iran in Children’s Literature”, Comprising talks and  exhibition of 500 selected works (1961 – 2001)  held in Isfahan.

•  Books for Disabled Children Group, participated in the Conference on the Rights of Disabled Children, through an extensive exhibition, and informal discussions.

•  Colleagues from CBCI invited to teach literature and reading in primary and middle schools.

•  CBCI members published vols. 3 and 4 of The History of Children’s Literature in Iran, bringing this monumental bibliographic Survey up to 1921.

•  CBCI General Secretary to take part / Speak at the International Festival for Children at the National Council for Culture, Arts, and letters in Kuwait. March 2002.

•  CBCI General Secretary to visit IBBY National Sections in Kuwait and Egypt.

Encyclopedia for Young People

•  ICBF Function March 2002 in Los Angles highly acclaimed as a success.

• EYP promoted at different School Levels. Great need for more creative approaches to capture readers.

•  Research Workshop for the young successfully conducted. Aimed to introduce EYP among other sources.

•   After 40 years, six of the CBCI founders spoke on the roots of EYP in a short documentary (Courtesy of the Friends of EYP).

•   Young Advisory Council met to decide on the EYP summer.

•  EYP Volume 7 was published in March 2002, in 279 pages. It contains 161 entries, 321 illustrations, 22 maps, and 17 tables. 

•  EYP publishers reprinted vols. 1, 3, and 5.

•   EYP Volume 8 is in the printing process. 

• EYP Volumes 9, 10, and 11 are being prepared in a parallel scheme at the CBCI.
